Oh s$*%

We had some bad storms on Tuesday July 11, a few limbs, lots of leaves and just one hanging limb on the treeline between my neighbors that I couldn't pull out.

We also had another short heavy storm roll through on Wednesday but I didn't check the house that evening.

Found this today:

Looks like the tree has been cracked for awhile

Winter storm - time for that last storm window

With a prediction of a high around -9F for Monday (low of -17F)  I decided it was time to install that last storm window.  I have not yet updated this window to a new or aluminum storm window as it outer size will likely be changed when the kitchen is renovated.  In fact this is something I want to do prior to painting the exterior but I have had a hard time finding suitable replacement siding.

In any case I removed the wood storm window latches when removing the paint.  I tossed most of them thinking I was not going to need them ever again  - forgetting about one window - the kitchen window.  Damn

I went to install the window back in December and discovered my problem.  Good news is I still have some around - bad news - this is a shot of two from the second floor bathroom window...

In the end I used drywall screws and washers for the top "hooks" and blocks of wood for the side.  A very tight fit - makes me think that the old wooden windows may be better than the aluminum windows - perhaps a slightly tighter fit but the aluminum storm and screens are far easier to manage - especially since I will use A/C most of the summer.

Maggie enjoying the snow.  We took a walk down to First Street and over to Main up to 4th Street.  She had snow sticking to her ears by the time we got home.

I set up the Subaru so I can charge it overnight - and the truck too - now to find that timer...  With windchill's predicted to be in the -40F range I want to ensure the batteries do not freeze.  I almost pulled the ES out and parked the Subaru inside - got find some more car storage space.

Next to finish some laundry - a wool sock load and maybe shirts.  I am going to cut off water to the laundry and drain back just to be safe.  (only water in outside walls - had the cold freeze once - no damage - warm worked, figured it out when the rinse cycle did not fill).

Got pork in the crock pot for lunch.

Cable Internet down..

Came home no Internet, cable TV working.  Call Comcast, in short it is time to upgrade my cable modem.  Not wanting to keep paying the modem lease and not wanting to wait for two days for a tech to come I head to town as I missed next day shipping from Amazon by about 30 minutes.

Check around, one store I wanted to check closed, Office Depot had a 2.0 version for $59, HH Greg nothing so head to Best Buy.  What do you know they have the model I was looking for the SB6121 and the "new" model mentioned in a Blog post from 2012.  So since they have it listed as supported by Comcast printed on the box I go for the "better" modle over the SB6121 for $10 less.  See review below:

SB6141 So with the $3.99 next day charge purchasing from Best Buy ends up being a wash at $89 yet it enable me to get my internet running tonight.

Motorola SB6141

I get it home and call Comcast - give them the MAC address and by the time the tech has researched a way to save me $10 a month by adding phone service my internet is working again.  Not super fast maybe 18.8 but for a week night that is ok.  Note in the picture of the installed device and the instructions that I am green, blue, blue, green and blue.  That means power, high speed multi channel bonded download (read review to understand), high speed bounded upload, internet working and gigbit connection to the router.

Now I just need to empty the DVR and return the cable TV equipment to save some real money on my Comcast bill.

High shaving

Took awhile to set up scaffolding but now starting the top of the clap boards.

Bad news is shingles look as bad up close. Once green on shingles too.

Good news is the shaver works great on the shingles, no nails to set, but I do not want to work that high.

WOW that's allot of dust!

A slow week but for a 10-32 5/8 cap screw

I lost one of the screws holding the carbide cutters last Sunday in the ivy.

I head to Menards, arriving about 10 till 8. I check the size of the screw 12-24, they have no 12-24 screws of any size. Monday, head back to town as I forget to order before 6pm from McMaster. Check, Rural king, Lowes, no 12-24 screws of any kind, now recheck thread size, 10-32, ok but Lowes has no 10-32 cap screws, only 10-24. Back to Menards, the have a couple 10-32 5/8 cap screws, got some in stainless to ensure I will not run out again, a long with lock washers (I found the lock washer dropped in the ivy)

Rain Tuesday, meeting Wednesday, Thursday, dinner out with interns and MTV crew Friday.

Finally get back at it Sunday morning, got a lot done, the scaffolding is really worth it. I will bolt some D rings to the house and strap the scaffolding to fm the wall with ratchet straps when I stack the units. It is really nice to be able to walk back and forth when working.

Maggie been board

Maggie has felt slighted as I work on the house but is ready to play as soon as I come in the yard.

I shaved and sanded the lower north side tonight.

Original back of house stripped

Will have to use chemical strippers on trim details but paint shaver great on the flats. Belt sander to vac does good on the ends the shaver cannot get onto.
