Roof Done - Just in time for the rain

The roofers finished the porch yesterday and got most things cleaned up today - WHOOPS - they forgot one toe board. So far 0.62 of an inch, some very heavy at times, but no apparent leaks.

You may note I didn't have many in progress images on the front side of the house - the roofing crew worked one section at a time so they did not leave the house open to the elements for as many days.

They reinstalled the weather vane that was on the house when I bought it. Note how the water beads up on the metal.

Note - the shed roof looks pretty shabby now - I have saved some good scrap in hopes I can get it and the doghouse covered.

Of course now the failing aluminum soffit on the front dormer of the house needs to be replaced with the PVC beadboard to match the back of the house. The fresh roof also shows up that the house is now in need of painting.

I am very happy with the work and how it really changed the appearance of the house and garage. Plus the place has another 50+ year roof on it. Once the new gutters go on, the soffit is repaired, the whole house is repainted and the fence is changed to picket I expect it to join the other jewels of my neighborhood.

First rain 10-7-08, garage done 10-6-08

The roofers finished the garage roof Monday evening just in time for today's rain. We got 0.40 inches and so far no leaks. It is hard to tell but look at earlier images of the garage fascia - I started with a 60 grit belt, then 50 then 36 grit on a belt sander to remove the dry and weathered wood (some moss/mold) down to solid fur suitable for priming with an oil based primer.

If weather forecast is clear for the next three days they will start on the front of the house on Wednesday. If not I guess once we gets a clear 3-4 day forecast.

Grizzy happy to be out of the house. He has lost his run of the yard while the roofer work and have the trailer parked in the gate.

Garage fascia board painted...

I scraped, sanded the fascia board today. Took most of the day to prep and prime. Started painting final coat from the ground with a long pole and a roller a 5:25 pm. Took 20 minutes or so to go around with the final coat. It took me nearly 2 hours painting 18-20 inches at a time to prime with a brush and moving the ladder. This was only 50-60 sqft of area to paint.

All this so that the part of wood covered by the drip edge will be painted. Once the gutters go on none of my work will be visible but I will know the board was painted right.

Roofers making progress:

The New roof on the back of the house. Garage still open

Note the old shingles under the vinyl siding - the flashing was extended up the side of the dormer.
