Going Home for Christmas

Rather than leaving the evening of the 23 I had checked weather & road reports, especially in Ohio and I decided it would be best to leave in the morning. One really useful site was www.buckeyetraffic.com What was especially helpful was the data from the embedded road sensors that would give you the average speed & period count of passing vehicles. So based on the high period counts & low average speed data I decided to leave in the morning. [I strongly suggest that if you are traveling through OH to check those sensors - hopefully more states will start providing access to this data via their DOT web sites]

On the morning of Christmas Eve as I go about 10 miles west of Richmond IN I hit snow-ice packed interstate with the average speed running about 15-20 miles hour. From west of Richmond IN to the edge of Columbus OH I was running on 2 to 3 inches of ice packed snow and it was like driving on a seriously pot holed road. This was the reason why the speed was so low the night before - the hard packed snow and ice was like cement. At least I wasn't trying to go south on I65...

The ice covered snow delays (see image above) added at least an hour and a half to my normally 13 hour trip. For the rest of the trip the weather was more or less ok - some snow in the mountains of PA. I arrived home around 1:30 am on Christmas.

On Christmas day I opened presents with my sister and parents. A popular gift exchanged was America (the book). Daisy was given a stuffed cow that has and electronic mooing function - she really enjoys it.
